Prayer Is Our Superpower

“Prayer is our Superpower”
June 2023
Most people are familiar with the name of Marvel. There are 80 years worth of Marvel comics around! There are 80,000 characters! And in 1966, a TV series featuring Marvel comic book characters was launched, which led to much, much more.

There are Marvel superheroes in comics, TV shows, games, movies and action figures. There are over 20 Marvel blockbuster movies. Some of the Marvel superhero names may sound familiar: The Avengers: Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, The Hulk, Captain America and Iron Man. Then there are the Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Eternals, (super beings sent to protect Earth). There’s also Ant-Man, Spider Man, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel - a woman! (Finally. It only took until 2019 to debut her.)

Some of their superpowers include “power armor;” flying; “elementals” - control over the elements like lightning & thunder & electricity, fire & ice, etc; super strength; healing; telepathy; shrinking to the size of an ant; and climbing walls like spiders.

In most of these movies, good characters ultimately win, and good triumphs over evil.
‘Sounds like spiritual warfare to me. Many of the names and powers and plots also echo themes found throughout the Bible. Solomon said it in Ecclesiastes 1:9
“… there is nothing new under the sun.” The Marvel comic book characters may be fighting evil all the time with all types of superpowers, but they forgot the most important one: Prayer. What has the ability to tap into the power of the Creator of the Universe? Prayer. What can bring hope when everything looks hopeless? Prayer
What can bring direction when things are hard to figure out? Prayer. What can make a difference in a loved one’s life when there’s nothing else you can do? Prayer.

There are so many good and important quotes about prayer from many famous Christian leaders I can’t list them here but encourage you to check them out yourselves: “50 Great Quotes on Prayer.” (thelife.com.)

Meanwhile, the Bible has a lot to say about prayer. “Don’t worry… pray!” (Philippians 4:6) “The prayer of a righteous person brings about much!” (James 5:16) “Pray all the time…” (Colossians 4:2)  And “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (I Thess. 5:16-18)

We are a church dedicated to prayer. We encourage everyone to be in daily prayer and meditation with Christ through through prayer. And worship. And reading the Bible. We also pray before our worship service on Sunday mornings. We pray during the week in the office. We pray in our Life Groups. We pray for hours on end while “passing the torch” with First Friday Prayer once a month. And now we have a Prayer Room in our new facility - dedicated just to prayer!  We look very forward to continuing to add “layers of prayer” as a church. An additional time of corporate prayer during the week, and a monthly community prayer time as well. For now, superheroes, it is our heart’s desire to see you also grow in the use of your superpower - Prayer!
